    Dear Birders:

I can now add my voice to Doug Greenbergs, "my White-throated Sparrow is back." I saw the first one of the season this morning feeding on the my deck (near LHS in the Berkeley Hills) with the golden-crowns and juncos. It appears that "my" bird is a tan-striped juvenile. For interesting differences in the behavior of the white-striped and tan-striped morphs read Kenn Kaufman's "Lives of North American Birds."

It appears that White-throated Sparrows are no longer unusual winter birds in our area -- or there's simply more of us noticing.

Debbie Brusco writes about hearing the "spiralling" soft song of the Hermit Thrush. I hear that same sotto voce song shortly before the bird leaves in the springs as if it's practicing for the full-throated ariias that bring such eloquence to High Sierra canyons.

About Cedar Waxwings: I, too, have been seeing or hearing small flocks for several weeks, but not yet in the astonishing numbers reported last year.

Flocks of turkeys come and go in my neighborhood always attracting attention from those suprised to see them.

    Recipes, anyone? (Just kidding)
