The cream of Courtenay Peddle's GGAS tour of Arrowhead Marsh this
morning was the sight of a grebe devouring an eel-like fish almost its
own length. When I first saw the bird, it had the fish by the middle -
like a bit of black rope whipping around at both ends. How it managed to
turn the thing business end down I do not know, but eventually it all
    went in.

After the group returned to the parking lot, I went back out and sat at
the end of the boardwalk as the ebbing tide flowed past me, adding
Cinnamon Teal, Green-Winged Teal, Godwits, assorted peeps, and half a
dozen Clapper Rails doing the chicken-walk to the day's total. Near-low
tide at the marsh has a lot of charm; it takes more patience to see the
rails, but they're going about their business happily and not in
    distress when you see them....
