After bowing out from a GGAS trip this am to photograph before the harsh
light got harser, at the first pond on Bay View trail after proceeding
along past the gate and bearing left up the hill to the observation
deck, I was surprised to see a Flamingo. I had assumed it was an
escapee. The first bicylist that stoped attributed it to Katrina. Then I
decided to check my Sibley and was surprised to find entries in the
Western edition. It was not the Greater because it had no black on the
undertail coverts; they were a brilliant salmon. It was not Chilean
because the legs were uniform in color. My view was not good enough to
see detail in the bill, but the back was a lovely shrimp color, not
pale. I would hazard a guess at a Lesser Flamingo. (I have to wait for
the film to come back). A third bicylist came up. When I told him about
it, he said that Flamingos were S. American and he was surprised there
weren't more. He then told me about the Chilean Flamingo which he sees
when he goes home.
Has anyone else seen it? From the visitor center postings, a Flamingo
has been seen for several weeks now.
