For the third evening in a row I saw the Red-breasted Sapsucker sitting
tightly near a crotch high in a eucalyptus tree in Heather Farm Park, Walnut
Creek. The tree is right alongside N. San Carlos Drive. Drive past the
parking lot entrance for the offices and community center, but turn left
into the same lot at the far north end. The tree the bird likes is the
first tree north of this entrance, between the bicycle trail and the street.
It is in the right hand trunk, 60-70 feet up. It will be necessary to
stand in the out in the mowed thistle field just to the left of the bike
trail. The bird was not there in the morning either today or yesterday. I
did have a Golden-crowned Sparrow, a Northern Flicker and a Lark Sparrow in
other parts of the park this morning.
