Tonight at 9:03 was the Equinox and we are now officially into fall. And
while I did not notice last night's northerly gale mentioned by Phila, the
    birds did.

My yard's second Pacific-slope Flycatcher showed up last Saturday and
spent 6 blissful days enjoying the insect bounty, plucking moths from the
lawn and unidentified things from the rosemary. And today it was gone
    with the wind.

But to take its place arrived our first-of-season White-Crowned Sparrows.
I heard them singing while still in bed this morning and saw three just
before sunset. The pleasure of hearing their songs is bittersweet, mixed
with the rueful realization that summer is indeed gone.
