While golfing today at CCCC in Pleasant Hill, I observed a wonderful pair of unknown birds. Hopefully with the enclosed description some of you seasoned veterans will be able to identify the birds for me. I have been birding for a couple of years, and have never seen these birds.
Size ---approx. 5", had a strong golden orange bill and legs, bill shape sparrow -like, breast area light color, back area more reddish brown, the male, I assume, had a dark rusty brown cheek, female softer coloring. The thing that stood out was the tail markings , it appeared to have distinctive white bands on the tail. The birds allowed us to stand pretty close, they didn't seem to be very secretive. They were siting on a split rail fence and the male was singing. The birds had a lot of eye appeal, they reminded me of the sweetness of the chickadee.
      Any thoughts?
