George Bing and I managed to bird in Del Puerto Canyon on July 8, the day before the road was closed to through traffic.

In Corral Hollow, we saw two Rock Wrens at the first bridge east of the Castle Rock Fire Station. At the Tracy Golf Course (Hwy 580 at Hwy 132), there were three Cassin's Kingirds at the beginning of W. Vernalis Road. In Del Puerto Canyon, we found a male Costa's Hummer about 200 yards east of Owl Rock
(about mp 3.5). At Owl Rock, we saw a Barn Owl in the hole with a wall of droppings, and a pair of Say's Phoebes. At mp 7.4, a Canyon Wren appeared briefly. In Santa Clara County, two Lewis Woodpeckers were at t he YL Ranch
entrance, about a mile (?) south of San Antonio Junction. We could not find any Lawrence's Goldfinches at the San Antone Fire Station, but did find a pair at the
pond with a culvert under the road, at mp 9.21, after a wait of 15 minutes.

Otherwise, bird numbers seemed very low.
