Just an update to my previous owl post. My wife and I re-visited the
Great Horned Owl site in Wildcat Canyon Park today and although we
still can't locate the nest itself, we were treated to an hour long
session of close observation of two adult owls and their chick! They
were all three out on branches basking in the late afternoon sun. We
got to see "owl chick gymnastics" as it did some vertical stretches,
head bobbed vigorously, hopped around the tree, and practiced beating
its wings while holding onto the branch. At one point it called
softly and one of the parents flew over to it. The chick has molted
in its primary flight feathers, but still lacks the ear tufts and
still has a quite a bit of the "fuzzy ball" look to it. Most
    engaging.

In case the mud situation was detering people from visiting it, the
past couple of sunny days has dried things out considerably (though
there are still a couple spots where you either detour or get right
    into the sloppy stuff).

    Good Birding,

    Kevin
