One of the few virtues of the relentless rains has been to turn the
Berkeley Meadow, now part of the Eastshore State Park, into a haven for
waterfowl and some shorebirds. This morning, during a 2-1/2 hour census
of the Meadow and the adjacent North Basin, I had 50 species, including
Green-winged, Blue-winged (a single male), and Cinnamon Teal. All were
in the flooded field that extends north from University Avenue, just
west of I-80, midway along the perimeter of the Meadow. This area can
also be seen from the trail that crosses the Meadow from the SE corner
to the west side. (The trail that runs from the SE to the NE corner is
at least a foot deep in water; bring your waders!)
