I was birdwatching in Tilden Park yesterday afternoon around 3 p.m. and saw
what I took to be a Hermit warbler feeding high up in the pine trees. I got
only fairly brief looks at it, but it had an all yellow face without any
noticeable black or gray auricular patch. It had a slight dark streak on its
crown somewhat similar to the female Hermit warbler in Sibley. However, it
had no observable dark on its throat (like the 1st winter female in Sibley).
The fairly bright all-yellow face contrasted conspicuously with a grayish
belly that lacked any streaking. I did not get to see back of the bird. I
was surprised to see this species at this time of year, but I gather they do
winter along the central California coast.

This observation was made near the EBMUD water tank, just NE of the
intersection of Grizzly Peak and Centennial Drive (above the Lawrence Hall
of Science). There were pyracanthas near the tank whose berries were ripe,
and the place was hopping with birds. Also in that local area in the 20
    minutes I watched:

    - red-breasted sapsucker

    - Nuttall's woodpecker

    - A flock of pygmy nuthatches

    - Chestnut-backed chickadees

    - Dozens of robins

    - A flock of cedar waxwings feeding on the berries

    - Yellow-rumped warblers

    - Ruby-crowned kinglet
