The Northern Shrike was readily seen yesterday (Monday, Jan 9) from 2:15 =
    -
2:30 p.m. along Pleasants Valley Road in Solano County just south of the
large white barn on the east side of the road. It was perched on the =
    lowest
of the wires for at least 10 minutes before flying off across the road =
    to
the west. On our return trip from the dam and Lake Solano we again =
    found
the shrike on the upper wires in the same spot from 3:30 p.m. until 3:40
p.m. We observed the shrike making a quick dive down to the ground =
    where it
caught a small shrew-like mammal. It returned to its perch, juggling =
    the
mammal before flying off across the road to the pines. We couldn't tell =
    if
it quickly ate the rodent or dropped it, because when it flew away from =
    the
pines further west it was not carrying it. Before it caught the rodent =
    it
called several times quietly. Note: This is only about 100 yards from =
    the
intersection of Putah Creek Rd and Pleasants Valley Rd.

We also found the White-throated Sparrow in the brush along the =
    black-topped
path next to the creek/lake in Solano County Park. It was in with a =
    couple
of Golden-crowned Sparrows about two-thirds of the way beyond the first
bathroom towards the second bathroom. =20
