I have very fond memories of having a male and female Band-tailed
Pigeon (at different times) stay in our home for their 3 month R&R
from the Lindsay Museum some years ago. Both were the most
delightful birds that I've had the pleasure of caretaking. Each had
their own personality and it was a real treat for me to be a part of
their lives. I have to admit that I got very attached to them as I
did the raven that also stayed here indoors for 3 months. The raven
was tethered but it was still a full time job keeping them and their
    cages clean.
We have never had a Band-tailed Pigeon as a yard bird and we've been
here in San Ramon for 24 years. I'd gladly invite them to feed along
with the sparrows, jays, crows, finches, robins, waxwings, juncos,
woodpeckers, blackbirds, doves and kites - they along with the owls
control the rat (I assume they are here because of the bird seed)
    population in our neighborhood.

    How can they be unwelcome?

Aren't their numbers declining due to habitat
loss in California? Aren't we stewards to foster
    species in decline?

    Please clarify.
