    Dear Birders,
This is the first time I've seen MOORHENS at this location, so I
thought it was worth a mention. I saw maybe two dozen between one end
of the Lagoon and the other. They were particularly easy to see near
the south end, looking west to the far shore. Juveniles were present,
so I assume the birds are breeding in the area. (Subadult
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS were also present so ditto re breeding.)
SORAS were sounding off throughout my walk. A MERLIN was at the north
end and an immature COOPER'S HAWK at the south. A pair of RED-TAILS
were perching together and two RING-NECKED PHEASANTS showed themselves
briefly near the north parking lot.
For those who don't know this area, it's a pretty good place to
observe ducks, shorebirds, gulls, and raptors. It's in Fremont and is
part of the Don Edwards NWR. To reach it from 880, take the Gateway
Blvd. exit if traveling north and the Warren Ave. exit if traveling
south. Either way, go west to Fremont Blvd., turn left, proceed to
the end of the road and turn right into the parking lot, for the south
entrance. The parking lot at the north end is at the end of a dirt
road off Fremont Blvd. just north of Warren Ave.
Be advised that it's partly in Santa Clara County.
    Good birding,
