Sep 24 Susanne Methvin and I did a Point Reyes Bird Observatory bird-a-thon
big day in Alameda County. Weather was perfect as we started owling at
4:15. While listening to Great Horned and Screech Owls at 4:25 we were
jolted by an earthquake that woke up a Great Blue Heron that "yelled in
surprise" somewhere near us. The owls just kept on calling. Unexpected
birds for the day included a LEAST FLYCATCHER at Coyote Hills Regional Park
in Fremont in front of the visitor center, a calling BLACK RAIL before dawn
in Arrowhead Marsh at Martin Luther King, Jr Regional Park in Oakland, and a
LAZULI BUNTING (this year's mascot for the bird-a-thon) along Alameda Creek
in Fremont. Near perfect weather conditions allowed us to find 164 species
for a new Alameda County big day record and raise more money for PRBO.
