    It turned from gray to a beautiful morning just as the trip started -
    with a very small but delighted group (including one first-time birder
    whom Travis converted on the spot after watching him photograph first a
    Black-Crowned Night Heron and then a Muscovy Duck with equal interest;
    spare binocs come in handy!) enjoying good, clear sightings of the
    relatively few birds in residence.

    One of the Cooper's Hawk juveniles put on a great show, alternating
    between ogling the contents of the geodesic cage and buzzing the
    freshwater ponds, but not managing to catch anything.

    Besides the regulars and a glimpse of a Red-Tailed Hawk flying high, we
    saw some Cedar Waxwings, including a youngster just barely old enough to
    have a crest but still all brown and cream stripes, sitting and posing
    for several minutes on a bare branch.

    And next month, some of the migrants will probably be back. Fourth
    Wednesday, seeya there....
