Yesterday as Hayward Regional Shoreline I saw a pair of Avocets with an egg. Neither bird attemped to incubate it during the 20 minutes I watched, but the male did partially turn it once. I was surprised at how large it was, about the size of a large chicken egg (Safeway et al).

Also, in the same vein, there were two Black-necked Stilt young. One seemed only a few days old, the other slightly older.

Doesn't answer the question asked, however. To that, I don't know.

Also at Hayward were a flock of Ruddy Ducks, some displaying with head-bobbing.

    Hello folks,
Wednesday morning in Mitigation Maarsh, Martin Luther King Shoreline, Oakland, ALA, I saw three very small avocet chicks, two of them certain not more than a couple of days old, in the smallest of the three freshwater ponds. This seems very late to me. Anyone have better records than I do?

    Good birding,
