 The bill must be more vascular than one would imagine.

  I recently read about Wilson's Snipe in Birds of North America:  "Apparently finds prey by touch with sensory pits near tip of beak."  To support tactile nerves at the tip of the beak, that beak must be quite vascular.  And think of the annual color changes in Tern bills, etc.
