Started seeing them 2 days ago up on Nimitz way on ridge of Wildcat Canyon
park....Heading north in an endless procession..... Yesterday El Cerrito was
inundated everywhere from Costco area at the Bay off Central into the hills.
Stood on my deck for hours watching them. I Alerted KRON 4 about them both
yesterday and today but alas The pope got the better of it. Unless I missed the
broadcast. All Internet searches provided fun reports of the invasion from Mexico
and the missightings as Monarchs. Apparently the San Fernando Valley no longer
has human populations.... All Vanessa!!! All because of the big rains. My
butterfly books all talk of the annual migration at exactly this time of year! But
sheesh isn't it a wonder?? In 26 years of California living I have never seen
    such a thing.
As a college student in Boston, junior year in September 1973, from my
apartment window overlooking Commonwealth Avenue I witnessed an identical migration
of real Monarchs. Heading south. For days on end it went on. I read later in
life how the Cape May Area of New Jersey is the biggest bottleneck of both bird
and Monarch winter migration on the East coast. My understanding is that in
some years it is dangerous to drive because there is no visibility. I'm glad
I'm sharing this wonder with all of you!
