This morning, 4/15, we watched a female PILEATED WOODPECKER for over an
hour at San Pablo Bay Regional Shoreline. She flew in at about 9:30 am,
flying directly over our heads and calling, coming from the south. She
hung out in the riparian area and spent most of the time foraging and
excavating a large hole. She was drumming loudly and from time to time
called loudly. She finally flew back further into the undergrowth, and we
were unable to relocate her or hear her for quite awhile before we gave
up. It's possible that she crossed San Pablo Bay to the north.

I doubt the bird will stick around, since no trees here are wide enough for
nesting and the wooded area itself is quite small to be of interest to a
    Pileated Woodpecker.

Directions to San Pablo Bay Regional Shoreline: Exit I-80 at Appian Way in
Pinole and head north toward the Bay. At the bottom of the hill, take a
left on San Pablo Ave. At the 2nd light, turn right on Pinole Shores
Drive. At the end of Pinole Shores Drive is a small gravel parking lot for
the Regional Shoreline. There is no public street parking. From the
parking lot, take the trail to the right (east) past the houses and down a
hill. At the bottom of the hill is a small patch of riparian area. This
is the area where the woodpecker was hanging out.
