Golden Gate Audubon Society Bicycle Birding Trip

15 people who were expecting sunny warm weather braved
the overcast day to see a record 65 species. A first
for this trip was a Red-shouldered Hawk seen on the
Alameda Creek Trail. At Coyote Hills, due to the
generosity of a birder with a scope, our group was
able to see a Great Horned Owl skulking in the depths
of a bay tree, and we also saw a pair of Red-tailed
Hawks nesting. At Quarry Lakes we saw great rafts of
Western Grebes and a couple of Rhode Island Reds
(chickens). Congratulations to the five people who
used public transportation. The Union City and Fremont
BART stations are each about a mile from the Alameda
Creek Trail using streets with bicycle lanes. The
Alameda Creek Trail, Quarry Lakes, and Coyote Hills
are all excellent birding spots.
