    When the 'action' of a bird makes it readily identifiable, I tend to be derelict in learning plumage characters. Comes back to haunt me when looking at photo images.
    
    If you see the bird fly, it should be easy to ID.  Loggerheads leave a perch, often dropping in elevation below perch level, and fly in a straight line, wing beats too fast to count. 
    
    Northern flight, to me, is Nuttall's Woodpecker like. Undulating and with slightly slower wingbeats. Been a long while since I have seen adult Northerns, but as I recall, they flash more white from the tail and wing as they break, the instant before landing.
