    Hi, all.
After reading all the great sightings lately, I'd
thought I might use the holiday to check some of them
out. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate & I
don't have lots of rain gear.
But just looking out the back door (in north Oakland)
this afternoon, in an hour or so I saw the following.
Nothing out of the ordinary, but I was surprised at
the count and enjoyed the antics of the crowd.
       Our local flock of bushtits
       A golden-crowned kinglet
       Lots of house sparrows
       A white-crowned sparrow
       Our local yellow rumped warbler(s)
       A probable Townsend's warbler (I got only a very
    quick glance)
       A possible oak titmouse
       The usual mourning doves
       Nuttal's woodpecker
       The resident Anna's hummingbird
I figure this wasn't too bad for sitting at the
window with a cup of tea.
Also--and, yes, I know this doesn't technically fall
into the range of this group--I had a great afternoon
birding at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix
(where I was an Election Protection poll monitor on
11/2) last Wednesday. I added 7 or 8 new species to my
list and saw more types of cactus and such than I
could imagine. If you're ever down that way and don't
have the luxury of getting out of town, this is a
great place to go. (It's even easily accessable by
    city bus!)
    Cheers,
    Alan Howe
