I have tube feeders hung for my yard birds, that have just tiny perches outside each small opening, and the Mourning Doves cannot get onto those perches at all -- only the small birds can. The Mourning Doves eat up all the seed that falls to the ground, however: which is good as they eat it up before the Roof Rats can get to it. At least, I think so (hope so). The Juncos and the White-Crowned Sparrows also have a field day eating up all the seed that falls to the ground underneath the tube feeders (which I bought at Wild Birds Unlimited in Pleasant Hill, CA), so ... it's all good. All the birds that want to feed, get fed, but the tube feeders, with fitted squirrel baffles on top of each of them, keep the doves and the squirrels from eating up ALL the seed too quickly. Also, another nice plus about the tube feeders is that the tiny perches do NOT accommodate the nasty Scrub Jays. And another plus for the umbrella-like squirrel baffles, is that it sort of helps keep the rain off the seed.
