Went out to Arrowhead Marsh about noon today with the wife. Low tide at =
ll:50 wasn't so low at 3.4 feet and I wasn't expecting much. We're just =
out of the car and she pokes me, pointing, a clapper rail out in the =
noonday sun. OK, a fluke. We sat on the bench and ate lunch. We walk =
to the end of the boardwalk and the familiar poke with "lookee there!" =
Another one. It came out and bathed, splashed and preened in the water =
less than 20 feet away. Went back and walked into the bushes. I =
imitated a trick I saw someone else do and clapped my hands twice. Out =
it came, looking around. It stayed out, tame as a barnyard chicken, =
oblivious to us. We left it when she had to pick up the grandkids from =
school.
I go out way more often than she. I even went out to the docks in my =
feeble attempt to learn gulls (should have gone to the dumps, few gulls =
at the docks that day). I have Peterson and Sibley and I study them. =
I'm all over the internet, here and elsewhere, studying birding. When =
we go out, I have to (again) explain how to use the eye-cups on the =
bins. The closest I've come to a Clapper Rail, since she last pointed =
some out to me, was on a group trip where I may have seen part of one in =
the bushes. It's luck I tell you, all luck! Ask any fisherman. Some =
folks are lucky. Oh well, Dezi & Lucy; George & Gracie; Me and =
........ At least I know where my luck is.
Happy birding
Bob
