Susan, re: Red Knots, the following is from Bob
    Richmond:

"The Hayward Shoreline has always been the best place
    around the bay for
Red Knots. They are most common from Hayward Landing
    to San Leandro
Marina, being most common around the mouth of San
    Lorenzo Creek. The
highest count to date was 2000+ at the mouth of San
    Lorenzo Creek mouth in
August. They also are seen in lesser numbers south of
    Hayward Landing.
They are seen in good numbers all winter long, but are
    most numerous in
fall. One summer 125 summered in the area."

To find wintering quantities, you really have to work
the shoreline. I know the Christmas Bird Count 2
years ago had 3 along the Alameda shoreline, but they
are few and far between. Best chance for breeding
plumage would be now with the handful that are still
    showing.

re: Tricolored blackbirds. The only recent sighting I
know of was a sizeable flock at B Ranch at Pt. Reyes.
They're often in sizeable numbers in the grass
adjacent to the Bear Valley Visitor Center out there.
fall/winter. In the east bay, Sherman Island Cross
Rd. at 160 might be a possibility. Good for
yellow-headed Blackbirds, and sizeable flocks of
blackbirds. This is northeast of Antioch and a few
    miles into Sacramento Co. fyi.
