      Wow! Thanks, George, for the great pictures.
      And I'll add my thanks for the great directions to
    the longspur's hideout (?). (Sorry, there've been so
    many messages about this that I can't remember exactly
    who to thank.)
      I, too, was out by the fire hydrant late this
    afternoon. What amazed me was how unfazed the bird
    seemed by all the activity around it. While the
    sparrows foraging in the same dried grass clumps
    paniced and flew off a number of times, it just kept
    pecking and picking at the grass. As some other
    birders out there said, we could almost have stepped
    on it. Quite a cool character!
      Before I left, I spotted a couple of
    black-shouldered kites in the brushy field between the
    hotel and the highway--one preening, the other hunting
    and trying to fend off a harassing crow.
