It was a beautiful, sunshiny day at the Hayward Shoreline this morning. A few
friends and I spent a couple of hours birding at the end of Winton Avenue. A
COOPER'S HAWK flew over the parking lot as we drove in, and as we walked to
the Bay, a juvenile NORTHERN HARRIER flew across the trail and ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD and AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES perched to give us views.. We turned right at the
Bay, eventually ending up at Frank's Dump, where a host of shorebirds were
congregating as the tide rose steadily higher. We had 32 species in all, most
notably over 200 RED KNOTS and a dozen or so RED-NECKED PHALAROPES. A
beautiful group of 10 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS flew overhead. Quite a few
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were in still in alternate plumage, a lovely sight to behold. There
were many SEMI-PALMATED PLOVERS, AMERICAN AVOCETS and a few BLACK-NECKED
    STILTS.
