I've seen Rock Wren on the hill behind the Nature Center at Coyote Hills, but not in several years.

Does anyone know what their normal haunts are around here?

Yard birds

Hi all,

Yesterday morning I had a sprinkler running on low in the yard that attracted many of the birds in the neighborhood. First, a mixed flock of at least 20 Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Bushtits, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and two Hutton's Vireos (?! definitely larger than the kinglets). Birds were flying through the water and alighting beneath it for a shower, perching on every nearby piece of vegetation. There seemed to be somewhat of a pecking order - the chickadees bathed first while the Bushtits waited their turn. After the throng left, a Townsend's Warbler and Dark-eyed Junco came by for a bath and, finally, my first Hermit Thrush of the season (I have been hearing them but hadn't seen one so far). What a treat!

A question, every morning I have been hearing what sounds like a Varied Thrush? Just a single, short note that has that quavery, wheezy quality. Any other candidates? The only other bird I can think of would be the Hermit Thrush but I have only caught them "chup" ing in the shrubs, do they have a single note call?

Thanks,
Martha
