I can't go myself, but this coming weekend (Feb 12-14) is "California Duck Days" in Yolo County. You can get the schedule from

P.S. I got this info from last Thursday's San Francisco Chronicle. The Thursday and Sunday sports sections have outdoor news, often just boring stuff about who caught what fish, but frequently informative and always worth checking. Last Thursday's feature article was on Sandhill Cranes, with a map of places you can see them.

I saw my first Selasphorus hummer of the year this afternoon on the northwest slope of Albany Hill. It was an Allen's Hummingbird, along the trail that extends north from the end of Madison St. There were also a Hutton's Vireo and at least two Oak Titmouses in the area, as well as other more common species.
The Allen's should have begun arriving back a week or more ago, but this is the first time I've gone out looking to this spot where they are regularly found.

I saw a Selasphorus of some sort while vainly looking for the male Oldsquaw at the Berkeley Marina last week. It was zipping in and out of a bottlebrush tree near the entrance to the harbor. It declined to stand still and be identified, but definitely had a lot of red on it.

Hello East Bay Birders,
Just a couple of questions after Larry's post about Albany Hill. I've never actually birded Albany Hill and there are very few citations in local newsletters concerning the spot so I was wondering: Are there some oaks buried amongst the [eucalyptus] up there? Are Oak Titmice and Hutton's Vireos resident there? For some reason I had never considered that there might be more than just eucs. What other species are resident there? Are there breeding Nuttall's Woodpeckers or Creepers? I mention these because I was surprised to find them resident in the euc. forest at Pt. Pinole. I have, on the other hand, always suspected that at least some vagrants must appear there in fall since the clump is so close to the bayshore and so prominent. If someone decided to adopt it as one of their "patches" I bet that with effort you would turn up interesting birds.
If anyone has answers to these quesions I would love to hear them.

PS The White-throated Sparrow found previously by Denise Wight at the end of Harbour Way in Richmond was still present yesterday. It was in the grass and weeds by the large bulldozers (of course).
