Shorebirds returning to Hayward Regional Shoreline

On Friday afternoon, June 27, I headed over to the Hayward Regional Shoreline (W Winton Ave trailhead) to see what shorebirds might have made an early return.

Oro Loma Marsh had a good number of Western Sandpipers, several Long-billed Curlews, and surprisingly, 30+ Semipalmated Plovers. There were also Willets and a few Black-bellied Plovers in various places.

Also of note were three Least Terns roosting on a small mud island near the northwest corner of Frank's Dump, and two Bonaparte's Gulls in the City of Hayward ponds south of the parking lot.

Good birding,

Arnold Small's Birds of California says that Sharp-shinned Hawks nest sporadically throughout the state in mixed oak and pine woodlands at elevations from 0 to 7,000 feet so it doesn't seem to rule out the possibility of Sharpies at Sunol Regional Wilderness.

As for breeding timing, the 3 Cooper's Hawk chicks at Lake Merritt in Oakland, as of a week ago, had just about fledged out and were taking short glides from branch to branch within the nest tree.

Still, I wish we'd had a better look and I wish I had known to be surprised!
