Hello folks,

The Dusky-capped Flycatcher was foraging Sunday morning in the deciduous trees adjacent to two orange pylons in the Botanical Gardens at Lake Merritt, Oakland.

Good luck and good birding!

Lewis' Woodpecker in Clayton
Sun, 6 Jan 2002 17:15:26 -0800
From: Polly Boissevain

Late this afternoon I found a Lewis' Woodpecker along the East Bay Regional Park District's California Hiking and Riding Trail in Clayton. The bird was flycatching along the creek next to the trail, just north of Crystyl Ranch Dr. To get to the trail, take Ygnacio Valley Rd east to just past the Cal State Hayward - Concord campus. Turn right on Pine Hollow, right on Rolling Woods Way and right on Crystyl Ranch Dr. The entrance to the trail is on the right side of the road about one-half block after turning on Crystyl Ranch Dr. The bird was along the creek, perched on power poles, near the first oak tree along the trail about 100 feet from the trailhead.

Martin Luther King Jr Regional Shoreline, Oakland
Sun, 06 Jan 2002 18:17:08 -0800
From: Larry Tunstall

This morning on Jeffrey Black's Golden Gate Audubon Society birdwalk at Martin Luther King Jr Regional Shoreline in Oakland, we walked from Hegenberger Rd along San Leandro Creek Trail West (getting good looks at birds in the creek as well as the Mitigation Marsh), birded around Arrowhead Marsh, and then walked back out the same way. The tide was very low. Highlights included great close looks at Clapper Rail, a Merlin feeding on top of a pole across the creek, a male Barrow's Goldeneye in the creek near the mouth, a Say's Phoebe, several Surf Scoter near the creek mouth, a pair of Cinnamon Teal, and a pair of Common Yellowthroat.

Here is what I caught of the group's composite list for the morning (52 species):

Pied-billed Grebe
Horned Grebe
Eared Grebe
Western Grebe
Double-crested Cormorant
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Snowy Egret
Canada Goose
Gadwall
American Wigeon
Mallard
Cinnamon Teal
Northern Shoveler
Northern Pintail
Green-winged Teal
Canvasback
Greater Scaup
Surf Scoter
Bufflehead
Common Goldeneye
Barrow's Goldeneye
Ruddy Duck
Red-tailed Hawk
Merlin
Clapper Rail
American Coot
Black-bellied Plover
Black-necked Stilt
American Avocet
Greater Yellowlegs
Willet
Marbled Godwit
Black Turnstone
Ring-billed Gull
California Gull
Western Gull
Glaucous-winged Gull
Forster's Tern
Rock Dove
Anna's Hummingbird
Say's Phoebe
American Crow
Marsh Wren (heard)
American Robin
European Starling
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Song Sparrow (heard)
White-crowned Sparrow
Golden-crowned Sparrow
House Finch

There were also a lot of blackbirds at a distance, not identified because they were just silhouettes - many of them were starlings by calls.

Good birding, Larry
